The town of Bezzecca is situated some 700 metres above sea level midst oft he Ledro Valley where the “Velle di Ledro” converges with the “Valle di Concei”. Thanks to its rich history of military encounters Bezzecca becomes the valley’s main tourism attraction during the summer months.
In 1866 the town was the site where Garibaldi’s forces battled the Habsburg forces. Another conflict of note that took place in Bezzecca was the static warfare in which Italy and Austria engaged each other for years on end during the First World War. The “Sacaro Militare” – trenches and passages to the hilly plateau and undercuttings for the troops’ quarters – reminds us of this dark chapter of European history.
When ordered by the king to leave the Trentino in 1866, Garibaldi replied “Obbedisco!” (“I obey!”). The famous quotation resulted in Bezzecca’s two main town squares being dubbed Piazza Obbedisco and Piazza Garibaldi.
The peace path “Sentiero della Pace” runs alongside the military passages on the “Sacaro Militare”. A little church, Santo Stefano, was erected on the Saint Stefano Hill in remembrance of all those who died during all the military clashed in and around Bezzecca.
